Theme:

Florida land forms

Purpose:

Students will create postcards to illustrate various land forms found in Florida.

Materials:

  • Postcards from Pluto: A Tour of the Solar System, by Loreen Leedy (1996). Holiday House, ISBN: 0823412377
  • Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea, by Vera Williams (1991). Scholastic Trade, ISBN: 059044851X
  • 4" X 8" index cards
  • crayons, markers, etc.
  • Florida map, atlases, etc.

Objectives:

  • Identify major land forms found in Florida
  • Describe the location of these land forms
  • Explain the importance and/or problems caused by these land forms

Procedures:

  1. Introduce the topic. Describe what land forms are. Read Postcards from Pluto or Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea.
  2. Strategies:
    1. Generate a list of Florida land forms to include rivers, lakes, sinkholes, springs, hills, bluffs, islands, swamps, marshes, sand dunes, etc.
    2. Label locations on the map.
    3. Ask students to choose any 2 land forms. Create a postcard for each one. The postcard must include, on one side, an accurate illustration of the land form. The other side must have a caption describing the picture. An original stamp and a correct address must be included. Each postcard must have a message that includes at least three facts about the land form, including its location and description.
  3. Culminating Activity: Postcards could be displayed or bound together to make a class book.

Evaluation:

Students will complete the postcards with the requirements.
