
Narrative – PineyZ Project By: Cade C.
Lake PineyZ is a branch off Lake Lafayette. They were once the
same lake. PineyZ was dug out to provide the inhabitants of PineyZ
Plantation with a fishing habitat. It also will offer them a place
to picnic and hike.
Lake PineyZ is a beautiful lake near Lincoln High
School. There are paths cleared that are easily trodden. However,
the lake itself is grown with weeds and algae, and the area around
it is developing and causing pollution. There are even illegal
artifact excavations taking place! The run off from the plantation
is not good for the lake. It is filled with gas and oil from the
machinery that is bringing things for the workers. When it rains,
the gas, oil, and wood shavings run off into the lake; using this
lake as a fishing habitat and park could be harmful to its surroundings.
The run off from PineyZ Plantation is mixed up with the water
in Lake PineyZ. This makes the fish sick and they die, which means
that there are no fish for people to fish for in a fishing habitat!
Lake PineyZ is an example of Karst Topography. The word
“karst” is a complete topographic term used to describe
limestone areas that possess topography strange and dependent
upon underground solution and the diversion of surface waters
(run off) to underground routes.
Natural eutrophication is the process by which lakes gradually
age and become more productive. It normally takes thousands of
years to progress. However, humans, through their various cultural
activities, have greatly accelerated this process in thousands
of lakes around the globe (such as Lake PineyZ). Cultural eutrophication
is water pollution caused by excessive plant nutrients. This is
why the people developing Lake PineyZ have hired others to run
the “weed boat”. This contraption scrapes the plants
and algae off the bottom of the lake. There were some samples
taken from this boat when they let us aboard.

Here we see an example of eutrophication in Lake PineyZ. As Todd
and Mr. Fannin take the water temperature, you can see the plants
growth of the lake, hence, eutrophication.
Lake PineyZ seeps through the soil to “join” the flow
of water underneath us known as the Floridan Aquifer. The Floridan
Aquifer is one of the major sources of ground water in the United
States. Every day more than 3 billion gallons of water are issued
up from the Floridan aquifer. The rocks that make up the aquifer
and are accountable for dividing it into Upper and Lower regions.
The Floridan Aquifer is where most of our water comes from.
The temperature of Lake PineyZ should be maintained. If the temperature
is too hot, the fish will die, and likewise if it is cold.
Dissolved oxygen is the single most important component of surface
water for the maintenance of aquatic organisms that use aerobic
respiration. Oxygen must be dissolved in order for the fish to
be able to “breathe”.
Nitrates and nitrites are nitrogen-oxygen chemical units which
combine with various organic and inorganic compounds
pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, numerically
equal to 7 for neutral solutions, increasing alkalinity and decreasing
with increasing acidity. The pH scale uses ranges from 0 to 14.
Turbidity is a significant contributor to the decline on populations
of North American aquatic organisms. The Impacts of turbidity
to aquatic organisms often seem inconsistent among watersheds
and experiments. It is measured in NTUs (Nephelometric Turbidity
Units). NTUs should be examined over a range of discharge recordings
and that this be used as a baseline to examine local effects.
Turbidity is not good for Lake PineyZ because it aids in the decline
of the populace of its aquatic organisms.
